While covering a Letters of Love gala Jan. 31, Hill takes a photo of the stage. Letters of Love is a local non-profit that makes cards and blankets to support children in the hospital. Taking photos at the gala was challenging because the lighting was constantly changing. Published photos from this event can be seen below.
The first time I picked up a camera, the Photo Editor legitimately had to show me what button to push to take a picture. It is safe to say I had absolutely no clue what I was doing. Ironically, the first photo I ever took for Echo is perhaps my best photo.
I was certainly nervous going into my first photo assignment. But I quickly learned that photos are very often the most compelling part of a piece. As cheesy as it sounds, a photo is really worth 1,000 words. I have gradually become more and more comfortable behind a camera, both with the technical elements of photography and with asserting myself as a photographer.
Along with growing more comfortable as a photographer, I have also learned a lot about the editing process for photos. On many occasions I have looked through photos with our photo editors, discussed which we should choose, evaluated how the photos work with our design and helped edit photos for Echo.

"Is this our photo? Or a professional photo?" My adviser asked that simple question with regards to this photo at a Late Night my sophomore year. I don't think I ever told her, but that is one of the most encouraging things someone has ever said about my photography. Since this was my first photo experience for Echo, hearing the admiration in others voices pushed me to keep taking photos.

When our volleyball team won its first Section title in school history, the whole school got involved. It was a crazy few days of coverage, and I had the opportunity to take pictures at the second day of the State tournament. I am very proud of these shots, because they capture the team's reaction after they won a game during the tournament.
A challenge we faced during the State coverage was that the Minnesota State High School League only allowed one photographer on the court per school. The yearbook took the photo spot, so we had to take photos from the stands. It was a little complicated to get cameras through security, but we figured out how to do it without breaking the rules, and have some good photos to show for it. |

School dance photos are avoided by staff members, in part because it takes the fun out of going to the dance, and in part because they are challenging photos to take. This same logic could be applied to taking pictures at the Letters of Love Gala -- but I did have fun. It was a very challenging assignment, because of the constantly changing lighting and unpredictably nature of a big group of teens.
